1940-1949

  • Barbara Lamb Dolezal’44, retired research chemist; Feb. 2, 2020, in Watkinsville, Ga. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Thomas R. Dolezal’42, and a son. Survivors include one daughter and one son.
  • Paul H. Thomas’44, World War II veteran, recipient of Beloit College’s Distinguished Service Citation; March 29, 2020, in Decatur, Ill. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan McArthur Thomas’44, brothers, Allen Thomas’31, Robert Thomas’43, and Richard Thomas’30, sister, Faith Thomas Noble’29, brother-in-law, Stanley Noble’27, and niece, Jean Noble Slocum’60. Survivors include two daughters and great niece, Allison Anderson Szot’01.
  • Patricia McCrary Bahler’47, retired nurse; March 11, 2020, in Logan, Utah. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom Bahler, and is survived by a daughter and a son.
  • Ruth Jack Soldz’48, Aug. 30, 2019, in Alexandria, Va. She is survived by a daughter and a son.
  • Nancy Wilkes Dorst’49, Jan. 24, 2020, in Appleton, Wis. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Claire Dorst’49. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, George Dorst’51, two daughters, and two sons.

  • Barbara Nelson Ockerby’50, retired elementary teacher; Dec. 8, 2019, in Charlton, Mass. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Ockerby, and is survived by one daughter and two sons.
  • Dorothy “Darry” Ritter Widergren’50, retired reading teacher; Jan. 14, 2020, in Cerritos, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband, John Widergren’50, and sister Jean Ritter Albaum’53. Survivors include two daughters and two sons.
  • Charles “Chuck” L. Bither’51, U.S. Army veteran, retired vice president of sales with HP Smith Paper Co.; Feb. 19, 2020, in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. He was predeceased by his son, Steven, and is survived by his wife of 67 years, Leanne Mack Bither’51, one daughter, two sons, and a daughter-in-law.
  • Charles H. “Howard” Ellis’51, retired manager with BP Amoco; Feb. 13, 2020, in Plainfield, Ill. He was predeceased by his wife, Guin Ellis, and is survived by one daughter and one son.
  • Barbara Leitner Essig’51, dedicated community volunteer; May 2, 2020, in Elkhorn, Wis. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Essig, and a daughter. Survivors include two sons.
  • David H. Mott’51, former owner of Yankee Doodle Woodworkers, avid hunter and fisherman; Aug. 10, 2019, in Hayward, Wis. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Carol Mott, and his sister, Marcia Mott Sprague’49. He is survived by two sons.
  • Dale A. Norris’51, U.S. Army veteran, retired investment representative; Feb. 2, 2018, in Pecatonica, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Johanna Norris, one daughter and one son.
  • Fred S. Peterson’51, U.S. Army veteran, retired English and literature teacher; March 30, 2020, in Freeport, Ill. He was predeceased by his sisters, Shirley Peterson White’47 and Mary Peterson Keefer’55, and cousin, Richard Nystrom’43. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
  • Dr. Charles C. “Chuck” Smith’51, U.S. Air Force veteran, retired urologist; May 3, 2020, in Green Bay, Wis. He was predeceased by his wives, Nancy Kyger Smith’51 and Mary Smith, and a son, Steven Smith’79. He is survived by one son and two step-daughters.
  • Joyce Toleson Avriette’52, retired flight attendant; January 2020, in Tucson, Ariz. She was predeceased by her husband, William Avriette.
  • Alice Needham Nelson’52; Oct. 28, 2019, in Kingsburg, Calif. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard Nelson, and is survived by one son and four daughters.
  • Norman W. Standish’52, U.S. Army veteran, former professional career consultant with the American Chemical Society, former owner of Standish House Bed and Breakfast; Oct. 28, 2019, in Freeport, Ill. He is survived by his wife, Ingrid Standish, one son and two daughters.
  • Barbara Olwin Bannen’53, retired teacher; May 1, 2020, in Rockford, Il. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Howard Bannen, two daughters, and two sons.
  • Bruce F. Bohor’53, retired research geologist; Nov. 17, 2019, in Green Valley, Ariz. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Leah Bohor, one son and three daughters.

  • Margaret “Maggie” Powell Thienemann’53, talented visual artist/painter, active member of the Rockford arts community; Feb. 20, 2020, in Rockford, Ill. She was predeceased by her husband, Rolf A. Thienemann’53, and is survived by one son and two daughters.
  • Charles J. Blanchard’54, U.S. Army veteran, retired CEO of International Trade Association; April 21, 2020, in Port Washington, Wis. He was predeceased by his brother, John F. Blanchard’56, father-in-law, Bryan H. Wilburn 1921, and mother-in-law, Marian Pitt Wilburn 1923. Survivors include his wife, Lucy Wilburn Blanchard’54, two sons, and three daughters.

  • Jean Schultz Spates’54, former tax preparer; Nov. 21, 2019, in Simpsonville, S.C. She was predeceased by her husband, William Spates. Survivors include her husband, James Moore, one daughter and two sons.
  • Mark G. Sanders’55, retired senior management consultant, community volunteer; Dec. 16, 2019, in Michiana Shores, Ind. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean Sanders, and is survived by one daughter.
  • John F. “Jack” Blanchard’56, U.S. Army veteran, retired sales manager with Testor Corporation; Dec. 19, 2019, in Marietta, Ga. He was succeeded in death by his brother, Charles J. Blanchard’54. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Blanchard, two sons, and three daughters.
  • W. “Dave” Cuddeback’56, U.S. Marine Corp veteran, retired financial manager; Feb. 7, 2020, in Waterbury, Conn. Survivors include his cousin, Catharine Langford Carey’61, and three daughters, including Catharine Cuddeback’76.
  • Howard F. Katzenberg’56, U.S Army veteran, owner and operator of H.F. Katzenberg Real Estate Agency for more than 50 years; Dec. 15, 2019, in Richmond, Ill. Survivors include his wife, Ann Johonnott Katzenberg’55, one daughter and one son.
  • Dr. Gordon A. Tuffli’56, U.S. Coast Guard veteran, retired pediatrician; Jan. 22, 2020, in Madison, Wis. He is survived by his wife, Karen Tuffli, one son and two daughters.
  • Edward C. Hager’57, U.S. Army veteran, former high school athletic director, former assistant basketball coach at Western Michigan University, retired sales manager for Jones Sporting Goods; May 10, 2020, in Kalamazoo, Mich. Survivors include his wife, Mary Drinkard Hager, four daughters, and four grandchildren.
  • Robert H. Halvorsen’57, U.S. Army veteran, retired attorney; Feb. 2, 2020, in Kohler, Wis. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Laura Halvorsen, one son and two daughters.

  • Lynn W. Saaby’58, U.S. Army veteran, retired real estate broker; Nov. 25, 2019, in Nyack, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Diana Marsh Saaby’58.

  • Harry F. Worth’59, U.S. Army veteran, retired attorney, former member of Beloit College Alumni Board; March 16, 2020, in Broomfield, Colo. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen Beckwith Worth’59. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Worth, and two sons.

  • Robert E. Hinshaw, former professor of cultural anthropology at Beloit College 1976-1981, noted author and expert on socio-cultural change in Guatemala; March 3, 2020, in Guatemala, Central America. He is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Julia Ryberg, and sons Ken and Christopher Hinshaw.
  • LaVaughn Larson Kunny, retired teacher, staunch supporter of the city of Beloit and of Beloit College; Dec. 3, 2019, in Beloit, Wis. She was predeceased by her husband and former Beloit College Professor of Biology Bartholomew Kunny. Survivors include her son, Bart Kunny’84, and two daughters, including Clare Kunny’75.
  • James H. Stewart, former Beloit College biology staff; Jan. 21, 2020, in Madison, Wis. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Yvonne Stewart, and six children.
